Yungas Lesser Long-Nosed Armadillo Dasypus mazzai Yepes, 1933

Abstract

Superorder Xenarthra, order Cingulata, family Dasypodidae, subfamily Dasypodinae, and genus Dasypus (Wetzeletal.,2008). This mono-typic species was allocated to the subgenu s Dasypus by Feijóetal.(2019). After many years of questioning the validity of D.mazzai(Fig.1, see Hamlett, 1939; Wetzel & Mondol fi, 1979; Vizcaí no, 1995), several articles in the last decade have reviewed the type material supporting the validity of this poorly known species (Fe ijó&Cordeiro-Estrela,2014; Abba et al., 2018; Feijó et al., 2018, 2019). However, limited molecular data from D. sabanicola place this species neste d within D. novemcinctus (Gibbetal.,2016; Abba et al., 2018; Feijó et al., 2019; Barthe et al., 2025), strongly suggesting the need for further taxo-nomic and systematic work on thesetaxa.
