Publication Multiproxy provenance analysis in the Devonian Villavicencio Formation of the Mendoza Precordillera, Argentina: correlation and geotectonic implications for the SW Gondwana margin(2023) Wenger, Federico Daniel; Arnol, Jonatan Ariel; Uriz, Norberto Javier; Cingolani, Carlos Alberto; Abre, Paulina; Basei, Miguel AngelThis work focuses on the sedimentary provenance of the Villavicencio Formation of the Mendoza Precordillera and integrates the information obtained with previous work on other coeval units of the Precordillera Central of San Juan province (Gualilán Group: Talacasto and Punta Negra formations) in western Argentina. Multiproxy provenance analyses are carried out from different applied methodologies (petrography, geochemistry, morphological, and Cathodoluminescence studies of detrital zircon grains, and analysis of U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes). The Villavicencio Formation is mostly composed of pelites and very fine-grained psammites. The major components are quartz, both monocrystalline and polycrystalline, and metamorphic lithics that associate this unit with a recycled orogen. Regarding geochemistry, the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) values are similar to the Post-Archean Australian Shales (PAAS), indicating a null to incipient degree of weathering. The ratios between different trace elements and rare earth elements (REEs) suggest the felsic composition of the source area. Th/U ratios differ, but a secondary uranium enrichment is inferred. The morphological analysis of the zircon grains reveals their mainly plutonic origin. The integration of U-Pb data with Lu-Hf data shows a juvenile-mantle origin in which the populations are dominantly Mesoproterozoic and ɛHf of positive values (up to 12), indicating poor differentiation. The Villavicencio Formation would be the product of deltaic deposits in which its components are dominantly from the Western Pampean Sierras associated with the Grenville orogen, assuming exhumation and erosion of the Mesoproterozoic basement. The data support the hypothesis of equivalence and correlation with the Punta Negra Formation in the Devonian depocenters of the south-central region of the San Juan Precordillera. Bruce asked Moreno to be an intermediary with the Argentine government and to facilitate Bruce’s wish for Argentina to take over the meteorological station that the Scottish expedition had established on Laurie Island (South Orkney Islands). Moreno was please to provide the necessary assistance and was instrumental in Bruce achieving his ambition. As a gesture of appreciation, before leaving Buenos Aires Bruce presented a small collection of Laurie Island rock specimens to Moreno as a donation to the Museo de La Plata. This donation initiated the museum’s Antarctic collection.Publication Los yacimientos de minerales no metaliferos y rocas de aplicación de la región NOA (provincias de Catamarca, Jujuy, La Rioja, Salta y Tucumán)(1983) Schalamuk, Isidoro Bernardo Abel; Fernández, Raúl Roberto; Etcheverry, Ricardo OscarPublication Sistema de Santa Bárbara: una nueva provincia geológica argentina(1976) Rolleri, Edgardo OrlandoPublication La antártida argentina(1948) Sgrosso, PascualPublication Biostratigraphy and biochronology of the Monte Hermoso Formation (early Pliocene) at its type locality, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina(2013) Tomassini, Rodrigo Leandro; Montalvo, Claudia Inés; Deschamps, Cecilia Marcela; Manera de Bianco, TeresaThe Monte Hermoso Formation, cropping out at its type locality of Farola Monte Hermoso (Buenos Aires Province), is a classical fossiliferous unit of the South American Neogene, highlighted by the abundance and diversity of its vertebrate remains. However, its biostratigraphy and age have been largely debated, and numerous discrepancies and controversies have been stated. In this regard, the result of the analysis of new materials recovered from the different levels of this formation, following a strict control of stratigraphic provenance, is here reported. As well, the provenance of specimens of previous collections has been evaluated. The studied assemblage consists of Osteichthyes, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves and Mammalia. These latter are the most numerous and belong to the Didelphimorphia, Polydolopimorphia, Rodentia, Notoungulata, Litopterna and Xenarthra. The recorded taxa suggest no important faunistic variations among the different levels of the Monte Hermoso Formation that would imply significant chronological differences, and hence, justify the recognition of two biostratigraphic units. The analysis of the first and last records as well as the taxa considered as exclusive, does not support the validity of the biozones of Trigodon gaudryi and Neocavia depressidens previously proposed. On this basis, a new scheme for the Monte Hermoso Formation at its type locality is proposed, including a new single biostratigraphic unit. This unit is the Eumysops laeviplicatus Range Zone, which represents the biostratigraphic base for the Montehermosan Stage/Age of the early Pliocene.
